Nicaragua, one of the poorest countries in Latin America, faces an alarming challenge: one of the highest rates of teenage pregnancy in the region. In a country where one in four pregnancies occur in adolescents, who often suffer the consequences of poverty and economic and gender inequality, a randomized pilot field study was conducted using technology to improve the sexual and reproductive health of young people in this country.

With funding from Grand Challenges Canada, TeenSmart International (TSI) implemented a project that evaluated a short-term intervention that involved the delivery of educational micromessages designed to improve knowledge, skills, motivations and behaviors related to sexual and reproductive health among Nicaraguan youth aged 14 to 17. These micromessages were delivered by mail, the Joven Salud platform and its mobile application.

Access to technology and the internet presented itself as a significant barrier, but the TSI team found ingenious solutions such as the creation of a mobile library. The delivery of micromessages through a mobile app and email proved to be an effective means of reaching those young people who had access to mobile devices and the Internet. In addition, it was found that those young people who used the mobile app were more likely to complete the entire intervention.

But that’s not all! The young participants expressed astonishing satisfaction with the intervention, reaching an impressive 98%. Not only that, but they also experienced significant improvements in their knowledge, skills and motivations in the realm of sexual and reproductive health. In addition, among the impacts was a delay in the initiation of sexual relations among the participants. The results of this study are promising and point towards the potential for scalability of this type of intervention.
